Industry: Pulp and Paper
Solution: Pump Repair
Location: Wallula , WA
Date: November 2023
Problem:
A local pulp mill was experiencing repeated failures on their stock transfer pumps. The combination of wood fiber slurry, chemical additives, and high flow velocities was eroding the pump casings and impellers, opening up clearances and dropping output. Each time a pump was pulled for repair, the mill faced days of downtime waiting on machine shop rebuilds and the cost of replacement parts that would erode again within months.
Solution:
Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) was used to rebuild the eroded pump casings back to original profile, providing a ceramic-reinforced surface with superior abrasion resistance against the fiber-laden stock. Interior critical running clearances were protected using Belzona 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal), which provided a smooth, erosion-resistant finish that improved hydraulic efficiency. Both products were applied cold on-site with no hot work, no welding, and no need to send components out for machine shop work. The pump was returned to service within 72 hours.
